It is with the deepest sadness that I am writing to tell you about the sad passing of my father and the Woodley Cricket Club President, Lloyd Hayes. He died peacefully at Stepping Hill with Sheila, his wife of 71 years, and Katie, his youngest daughter, by his side.
As many of you will know, Lloyd was Woodley Cricket Club through and through since he joined in 1967. He was a fine opening batsman and was also the Groundsman, the Chairman and our President over many years. He was also a well respected Umpire in the Derbyshire and Cheshire Cricket League along with his umpiring partner, Terry Cranfield. Arguably, they were two of the best umpires the league has had and were legends, along with many more who have donned the white coat.
He fought stubbornly and determinedly to the very end which typified his approach to batting and also keeping Woodley CC going in the face of many challenges.
He will be sadly missed by all of his family, including his eight children and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Each and every generation has represented Woodley Cricket Club with pride and even son-in-laws too.
He will be greatly missed by all those he has known and influenced at Woodley CC and also at many clubs beyond his immediate cricketing family.
Lloyd Hayes leaves behind a huge legacy and was a genuinely good man.
Yours in cricket,
Tony and the whole Hayes family
